Growth Form: Large herbs.

Stems: Stems above or below ground, decumbent to erect.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades usually sagittate or hastate, rarely peltate. Upper surfaces glabrous; lower surfaces glabrous to pubescent. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers in axillary inflorescences, these 2 to several together, much shorter than leaves, subtended by bracts at base; spathe markedly constricted in lower portion to form a tube, opening only at anthesis, then with at least the base reclosing tightly; spadix shorter than spathe, pistillate portion somewhat shorter than fertile staminate portion, with a sterile staminate portion in between, and a large terminal sterile appendage. Flowers unisexual, naked. Calyx absent. Corolla (petals) absent. Staminate flowers comprising truncate synandria of 3–8 stamens. Ovary superior (pistillate flowers), 1-celled or sometimes 3–4-celled at apex; stigmas weakly 3-lobed; ovules few, basal.

Fruit: Berries 1–seeded to several–seeded. Seeds subglobose to ellipsoid; rather large; seed coat thickish; smooth or scabrous; embryo broadly conic; broadly cylindric; or elongate; endosperm copious.
